The following are three specialties recognized by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties that are worth pursuing in 2020.

Oncology Pharmacy

This specialty focuses on delivering evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management along with direct care for patients with cancer. This includes the assessment of treatment as well as monitoring adverse reactions to medications. More than 3,100 pharmacists hold the Oncology certification via BPS.

Pediatric Pharmacy

Choosing this specialty involves ensuring safe and effective medication use and outcomes in children up to the age of 18. There are more than 1,100 Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialists.

Critical Care Pharmacy

Patients in critical condition are those with a life-threatening injury or illness. This requires comprehensive care and constant monitoring on behalf of the healthcare provider. The role of the Critical Care Pharmacist involves working to ensure that safe and effective medications are administered to critically ill patients. More than 2,500 pharmacists hold the BPS Board Certification in Critical Care.

The following are the requirements for board certification as stated by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties:

  • Completion of Pharmacy Program Accredited by the ACPE
  • Active Pharmacy License to Practice Pharmacy in the U.S.
  • Demonstration of Practice Experience – One of the Following:
    • Four Years of Practice Experience
    • Completion of PGY-1 + Two Years of Practice Experience
    • Completion of PGY-2 Residency in Oncology Pharmacy
  • Passing Score on Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Certification Exam
